I took the long way to the post office to scoop up a couple of flat rate boxes. I went sailing around a tight turn and heard a little plasticky clink clink. I put it in neutral and coasted while I listened for more. I didn’t hear anything so I looked down to see how fast I was going before I chose a gear and matched ....
UPDATE : It’s not an easy fix. I can ship it across the country and pay $300 for a speedometer shop to fix it, or I can buy another which I’m going to guess will cost me more than $300. Weak.

I think you just solved quantum gravity.
Someone grab a watch, a flashlight, and a small dense sphere.

Tripper: Well, to be entirely honest, no. I don’t.

Google Maps/Android Auto finally shows you your speed (and sometimes the speed limit, which is sometimes right).

Reminds me of a time when I drove my car to the altitude of 12000 ft and the Crystal popped off of my cheapo waterproof watch.

Perfect excuse to throw in a US spec cluster, but it will throw off the vibe... I will probably just repair it, but will keep an eye out for a nicer set.

Clearly it was built with “German Quality”
You should still be able to judge your speed reasonably well using your tachometer... unless that’s broken too...

“Based on where the needle is pointing, I was only doing 40km/h”
![]() 07/25/2019 at 15:30 |

One other thing... look at the bright side, according to where the needle is pointing, you’re always doing 40km/h... and thus, IMMUNE FROM SPEEDING in most places!!!

Bad news but not that bad . The cluster comes out fairly easily, I’m not sure if it can be fixed but I think it can. If not, I’ll pony up for a new one. Unfortunately, while most stuff for the 02 is pretty cheap stuff like interior/exterior bits from BMW are not.

It’s not a need to know thing for me.
![]() 07/25/2019 at 15:35 |

I’m sure it’s age and the car’s super stiff suspension didn’t help it hang on. Everything else works and I can still see the bit that the needle was attached to moving. I don’t care how fast I’m going anyway.
Guessing it’s an easy fix, or a costly replacement. Either way the cluster comes out without too much effort.

I’m pretty much immune anyway. It will go 100+ but really only likes about 85 particularly with the 4 speed (I’m in PA so that is right lane speed) . I’m willing to bet that if I get pulled over where I live it’s going to be a “fuck this thing is cool! S low the fuck down and get out of here” situation.

I know it wouldn’t hold up in court, but having Google Maps/Waze display the speed limit can be really helpful.

Yes this. I know that 3k in 4th is 60 mph in my datsun and so on...

I find myself judging speed by gear and RPM more often than reading the speedo despite the fact that there is a digital speed readout in the tach.

Stupid question, but if it’s that much to fix and you’d have to pay that anyway, did you consider trying to fix it yourself?

Ive seen tach needles do this but not the speedo.
Ah the Joy's of old car ownership.
![]() 07/25/2019 at 16:52 |

I might after I watch a few videos assuming they are available. I’ll probably buy a new one with the intent of re-installing the original after I fix it or get it fixed. I don’t want one gauge to look brand new and the others to look 45 years old.
![]() 07/25/2019 at 17:35 |
|
Wait that’s actually an easy fix if I’m looking at that correctly, especially if it’s a VDO gauge. . The face and glass is held on by a metal ring crimped on to the assembly. If you can gently pry that off, you can probably stick the needle back on and be on your way. I’ve done it on my 924 twice but for reasons not related to a needle falling off.
![]() 07/25/2019 at 18:11 |

Makes sense. I just figured that reattaching the needle can’t be that hard if that was the only problem with it! :)

I’ve always memorized shift points, but when my transmission speed sensor started going bad, I started paying a lot more attention to crusiing speed/rpms. it came in handy when my sensor failed shortly after.
